Abstract
This data-driven paper examines online climate and sustainability communication behavior from 2014–2021 across three stakeholder groups: fossil fuel firms, NGOs, and IGOs. Using machine learning and vector autoregression on Twitter data (n = 668,826), the study finds that stakeholders are responsive to each other, with the fossil fuel industry more likely to respond to IGOs and NGOs, particularly on environmental justice and climate action. The industry focuses more on public relations and corporate sustainability. Extreme weather events and stock market performance do not significantly affect communication patterns.
