Distribution and Health Risk Assessment of Microplastics in Fishes, Water and Sediment from Nigerian Inland Rivers during the Rainy Season

V. F. Doherty, I. A. Aneyo, et al.

Research conducted by Victoria Funmilayo Doherty, Idowu Ayisat Aneyo, Christian Ebere Enyoh, Oluwatoyin Tirenioluwa Fatunsin, Ikechi Godlove Emeronye, Oluwatosin Aishat Amolegbe, Oluwagbemiga Paul Igbagbosanmi, Folashade Ajagbe, Tajudeen Olanrewaju Yahaya, and Nnamdi Henry Amaeze reveals how rainy-season runoff intensifies microplastic pollution across seven Nigerian inland rivers. The study tracks particles in water, sediments, and fish, identifies 15 polymer types, and highlights fish as the primary exposure route. Although estimated daily intake was low, microplastics’ ability to carry chemical contaminants raises potential long-term health concerns.... show more
