Detecting Users’ Emotional States during Passive Social Media Use

Passive social media can shape moods — this study introduces the first model to predict user emotions during passive social media consumption using only smartphone interaction and physiological signals. In a 29-participant experiment with an Instagram-like feed, the classifier detected up to eight emotional states with peak accuracy of 83% and identified shifts within eight seconds.
