Abstract
This systematic review examines the literature on splatter, droplet settle, and aerosol generation during periodontal procedures, assessing contamination risks relevant to COVID-19. Fifty studies were included, encompassing ultrasonic scaling, air polishing, prophylaxis, and hand scaling. All procedures produced contamination, even with suction, with higher power settings increasing contamination. Contamination was found on operators, patients, and assistants, persisting for up to an hour after treatment. The review emphasizes infection control, appropriate PPE, and lower power settings to mitigate contamination.
