Demographic and labor force impacts of future immigration flows into Europe: does an immigrant's region of origin matter?

G. Marois, M. Potancokova, et al.

This innovative research by Guillaume Marois, Michaela Potancokova, and Miguel Gonzalez-Leonardo employs a robust microsimulation model to project immigration scenarios across 31 European countries up to 2060. Discover how shifts in immigration origins impact population distribution while leaving age structure largely unchanged.

Abstract
This study uses a population microsimulation projection model (QuantMig-Mic) for 31 European countries to simulate different immigration scenarios from 2020 to 2060. The model incorporates the region of origin as a source of heterogeneity, simulating scenarios with drastically changed origins of immigrant flows. Results show that shifts in immigration origin impact the spatial distribution of the population, but age structure is marginally affected. Changes in immigration flow composition do not significantly alter the increasing age dependency ratio, labor force participation rate, or educational structure of the labor force.
