Abstract
This paper investigates the relationship between supply chain complexity and a city's resilience to supply chain shocks. Using data on supply flows to 69 major US cities, the authors find a trade-off between horizontal (supplier diversity) and vertical (supply chain depth) complexity. Increased horizontal complexity, particularly for technologically sophisticated products, is associated with less intense supply chain shocks. These findings suggest that fostering supplier diversity can enhance urban resilience to supply chain disruptions.
