Abstract

This study investigated the association between child marriage, maternal serum metal exposure, and preterm birth risk in rural Bangladesh. Data from 780 mother-offspring pairs were analyzed. Early pregnancy exposure to zinc, arsenic, and strontium, and mid-pregnancy exposure to barium were associated with preterm birth. Younger marriage age increased the risk of preterm birth exponentially. Mediation analysis indicated that these four metals mediated 30.2% of the effect of marriage age on preterm birth risk, suggesting a potential causal pathway.
