Abstract
This study investigates the portrayal of elders' living conditions in the Chinese Economic Daily through metaphor analysis of 309 news reports. Three major metaphors—METAPHOR OF NET, METAPHOR OF BUILDING, and METAPHOR OF CHASM—are identified and analyzed. The study finds that the "chasm" representing the gap and obstacles faced by elders calls for a "protective net," but this net often marginalizes elders' subjectivity.
