In boreal summer 2022, Pakistan experienced extreme rainfall causing severe flooding. Concurrent heatwaves struck central China and Europe. Analysis reveals the record rainfall stemmed from compounding factors: La Niña-induced strong easterlies, intensified Arabian Sea southerlies (with a recent upward trend), and tropical-extratropical interaction (Europe blocking and Arabian Sea monsoon flow). Wave activity flux and regression analyses identified a Rossby wave-like pattern linking Pakistan's flooding and the heatwaves, differing from known teleconnection patterns. Excessive rainfall positively fed back, enhancing large-scale flow. The 2022 event intensified the 2010 flood, also driven by compounding factors but within a more pronounced upward trend.
