Abstract
Esophageal cancer is a significant malignancy with high mortality. Adenocarcinoma, a glandular form of esophageal cancer, has seen a dramatic increase in incidence since the 1970s, exceeding the explanatory power of known risk factors like Barrett's esophagus, smoking, and obesity. A strong association between high-risk human papillomavirus (hr-HPV) and adenocarcinoma in about 25% of patients may partially explain this rise. This finding could lead to improved detection, risk stratification, and treatment strategies, including vaccination, potentially reducing mortality.
