Abstract
This study investigated the molecular mechanisms associated with chronic caffeine consumption in the mouse hippocampus using untargeted orthogonal omics techniques. Chronic caffeine exerted pleiotropic effects on the hippocampus at the epigenomic, proteomic, and metabolomic levels. Caffeine lowered metabolism-related processes in bulk tissue, but induced neuron-specific epigenetic changes at synaptic transmission/plasticity-related genes and increased experience-driven transcriptional activity. These findings suggest that regular caffeine intake improves signal-to-noise ratio during information encoding and boosts information processing during learning.
