Beyond trade statistics: how much do exports actually contribute to domestic value added?

Abstract
Koopman et al. (2014) and Los et al. (2016) decomposed gross exports into various value-added components under the input–output (IO) assumption that final demand is exogenous, which disconnects production from income and consumption feedbacks. This paper proposes a method to quantify the value added of exports that explicitly links production, income, and household consumption, following Miyazawa (1968, 1976) and Sonis and Hewings (1993). By endogenizing household consumption in output determination, the model captures additional propagation mechanisms beyond conventional IO linkages. The approach is directly applicable using available world input–output trade databases, providing a more complete understanding of the domestic value-added impacts triggered by exports.
