This research paper analyzes trends in ocean research from 2000-2020 using Web of Science data, focusing on five ocean basins. While Atlantic research has been dominant, Pacific research is rapidly catching up due to increased output from China. International collaboration has grown, primarily involving G7 countries and China, but research remains largely domestic. Growth in collaborations involving Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and South America is noted, but sub-Saharan Africa lags behind. Increased support for education and infrastructure development is crucial to fostering a more sustainable and diverse global ocean science network.
