Artificial intelligence shows promise to transform mental healthcare by enabling more objective definitions of illness, earlier detection in prodromal stages, and personalized treatments. Reviewing 28 studies that used EHRs, mood rating scales, brain imaging, smartphone/video monitoring, and social media, the authors highlight high-accuracy, proof-of-concept work across depression, schizophrenia and suicide risk while urging caution and further work to bridge research and clinical care.
