Abstract

This study investigates the correlation between textual ideology and the English translations of Chinese political discourse, focusing on how translation shifts in modality relate to the socio-political and socio-cultural context. Using Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), three main translation shifts involving *should* and *will* are identified: addition of modal items, downgrading modality value, and upgrading modality value. These findings are attributed to van Dijk's ideological square model and the variable of tenor (social distance between speaker/translator and audience).
