An ECG biomarker for sudden cardiac death discovered with deep learning

Z. Obermeyer, A. Schubert, et al.

Using deep learning on a region-wide ECG–death-certificate dataset, the authors isolate a small high-risk group with a 7.0% annual sudden cardiac death rate—most of whom were missed by LVEF—and show implanted defibrillators cut mortality. The model is externally validated and pairs with a generative ECG model to reveal a previously undescribed visible biomarker.
