Abstract
This paper reports a solvent-free, solid catalyst for the selective oxidation of sulfur mustard (HD) to the less toxic sulfoxide using ambient air at room temperature. The catalyst comprises hydrophobic salts of tribromide and nitrate, copper(II) nitrate hydrate, and Nafion™. It rapidly removes HD as a neat liquid or vapor and exhibits a colorimetric change from green to brown in the presence of HD, enabling detection. Mechanistic studies confirm the reversible formation of a key bromosulfonium ion intermediate and the role of Cu(II) in accelerating the reaction. XANES and EXAFS studies confirm tribromide regeneration.
