Abstract
Individual psychotherapy is generally effective, yet understanding moment-to-moment language use of effective therapists remains limited. This study introduces novel methods to analyze therapist language in psychotherapy, focusing on timing, responsiveness, and consistency across five language domains. Findings reveal dynamic therapist language within sessions, responsiveness to patient language, and a relationship to patient symptom diagnosis but not severity. Analyzing therapist language at scale is feasible and may inform future research and training.
