📖 About the Vice-Chancellor's Studentship Scheme 2025
Under the UWS Vice-Chancellor’s Studentship Scheme 2025, eight funded PhD studentships are offered for an October 2025 start. These highly selective studentships span the University’s four academic schools:
- Business & Creative Industries
- Computing, Engineering & Physical Sciences
- Education & Social Sciences
- Health & Life Sciences
The studentship themes align with the University’s strategic ambitions, emphasizing distinctive research, innovation, and addressing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
Successful applicants will be aligned with their relevant UWS academic school and will also become part of the UWS Doctoral College, which provides an outstanding quality experience, supporting your student journey with investment in training, resources, and facilities.

✅ Eligibility Criteria
General Requirements
- Open to UK citizens and applicants with pre-settled or settled status.
Academic Requirements
- A good Honours degree (First or Upper Second Class) or a postgraduate taught/research qualification in a relevant area of study.
- Demonstrated research aptitude through undergraduate or master’s-level studies.
- Passion for the subject area, enthusiasm for research, and motivation to manage a personal learning program.
English Language Requirements
For applicants whose first language is not English:
- IELTS Academic Module:
- Overall score: 6.5
- No sub-test less than 6.0
- Equivalent scores in other recognized qualifications are also accepted.
- Pre-sessional English Language courses are available for those who do not meet the required criteria.

You can apply for postgraduate research at UWS via their free online application system.
Required Documents
- Copy of your degree certificate(s).
- Copy of your academic transcript(s).
- English language proficiency test certificate (if English is not your first language).
- At least one academic reference, signed and on headed paper or sent from the referee’s work email account. If unavailable, provide the email address of your academic referee.
- A research proposal.
Once ready, submit your application through the UWS online application system. Applications are open until the start of the intake.
