To be eligible for the award, nominees must meet the following requirements:
- Must be European citizens or have been residents for at least 12 months.
- Nominees cannot be employed by Microsoft or its subsidiaries (full- or part-time), including anyone who has had a remunerative relationship with the company in the 12 months prior to nomination.
- There are no restrictions on career stage; however:
- Nominees must still be active in their careers and not retired.
- Early- to mid-career computer scientists should have made major contributions and impact in their field of research.
