This is not a residency fellowshipβ€”all McGraw Fellows work from their own offices. Applications are accepted for in-depth text, audio, and short-form video pieces, but long-form documentaries are not supported.

  • Open to anyone with at least five years of professional experience in journalism.
  • Supports work by freelance journalists, as well as reporters and editors currently working at a news organization or journalism non-profit.
  • Reporters and editors can apply directly in the name of their organization.

Application Requirements

Applicants should submit:

  1. Story Proposal:

    • A well-focused proposal of no more than three pages.
    • Highlight what’s new and significant about the story, why it matters, and its potential impact.
    • Include preliminary reporting and documentation to demonstrate the story’s validity.
    • Outline a proposed reporting plan and timeline for completing the story.
    • If you have a media outlet lined up for your story, mention it in the proposal.
  2. Journalism Samples:

    • Three professionally published samples showcasing your ability to tackle an in-depth story in the proposed medium.
  3. Resume:

    • Provide an up-to-date resume.
  4. References:

    • No references are required at the time of application. Finalists will be asked to provide references from two editors or others familiar with their work. Freelance applicants can discuss alternatives if references are a problem.
