The Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen (IWM) is now accepting applications for its Lesia Ukraїnka Fellowship Programme 2026/2027. This prestigious fellowship supports outstanding scholars exploring global cultural, social, or political issues related to Ukraine.

📖 About the IWM Lesia Ukraїnka Fellowship

The Lesia Ukraїnka Junior Visiting Fellowship provides scholars with:

  • Residency at IWM Vienna.
  • Access to research facilities.
  • Integration into the institute’s academic community.

🎁 Benefits of the Fellowship

  • Stipend:
    • Postdoctoral researchers: EUR 3,300/month.
    • Doctoral candidates: EUR 2,750/month.
  • Covers living expenses, including:
    • Travel, accommodation, health insurance, utilities, transport, telecommunications, and research costs.
  • Additional benefits:
    • Office space, internet access, research facilities, administrative support, and participation in IWM academic activities.

✅ Fellowship Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Open to scholars in humanities or social sciences.
  • Doctoral candidates must be enrolled in a program.
  • Postdoctoral researchers must have defended their PhD no earlier than 16 January 2022.
  • Priority is given to:
    • Applicants based in Ukraine.
    • Projects related to Ukraine.
  • Only one fellowship application is allowed per academic year.
  • Previous fellows must wait two academic years before reapplying.

📝 Application Process

Required Materials:

  1. A brief letter of motivation addressing:
    • How the project would benefit from time at the IWM.
    • Its connection to the IWM’s mission and research.
    • Concrete research/writing goals during the fellowship.
  2. A project description (max. 550 characters, including spaces).
  3. A project proposal (max. 7,500 characters, including spaces), containing:
    • Objectives of the project.
    • Discussion of the current state of research.
    • Methods.
    • Work plan.
  4. A curriculum vitae, including a list of publications.
  5. Two letters of recommendation:
    • Letters must be submitted directly by the recommenders before the application deadline.
    • Recommenders will receive an automatic email with a link to a webform after the application is submitted.

Important Notes:

  • All application materials must be in English.
  • Documents must be combined into a single PDF file.
  • File names must use Latin characters only.
