π About Joel Joffe LLB Scholarships
These scholarships are offered in memory of Joel Joffe, who was Nelson Mandelaβs lawyer during the 1963/4 Rivonia Trial. Joffe played a crucial role in the struggle for democracy in South Africa. The Trust continues to honor his legacy by inspiring others to advance human rights and reduce poverty.

The scholarship includes:
- R40,000 towards the last year of your LLB studies.
- A paid internship at the Equal Education Law Centre or Legal Resources Centre after completing your LLB.
- Opportunities to enhance your academic and leadership skills through organised events.
Additional benefits:
- Support for both full-time and part-time study, including distance learning.
- Participation in an annual conference for current scholars and other smaller events throughout the year.
Scholarship holders are expected to actively participate in these activities and contribute to the Canon Collins Trust network.
β Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Be a national of South Africa and normally reside in the country.
- Have a strong academic record and demonstrate extra-curricular involvement.
- Be a current 3rd-year undergraduate Law student at the University of the Western Cape or the University of Fort Hare, completing LLB coursework no later than December 2026.
