The James McCune Smith Scholarships Fund supports Black UK domiciled students to undertake PhD research at the University of Glasgow in any research area where supervision is available. This scholarship offers an enhanced experience through:

The scholarship provides the following benefits:
- Full funding covering:
- Stipend: Estimated at £19,795 for 2025 entry
- Fees: Covered for up to four years
- Training grant: £3,000 per year
- Additional opportunities:
- A six-month placement with industry, government, non-governmental organizations, or other employers
- Mentorship from outside academia for broader perspectives and networking
- Leadership training and community-building activities
- Support for conferences and other networking opportunities
✅ Eligibility Criteria
To apply, you must:
- Be a UK domiciled Black student from one of the following backgrounds:
- Black African
- Black Caribbean
- Black Other
- Mixed White and Black Caribbean
- Mixed White and Black African
- Other mixed backgrounds (including Black African, Black Caribbean, or Black Other)
- Note: Applying for this scholarship does not prevent you from applying for other funding schemes.
