The ICGEB PhD Fellowship for East African Scientists provides:

🎁 Benefits of ICGEB Biotechnet PhD Fellowships

Successful applicants will receive:

  • Monthly stipend:
    • Trieste (Italy): €1,500
    • New Delhi (India): $1,122
    • Cape Town (South Africa): ZAR 16,500
  • Duration: 3-year PhD course with the possibility of a 1-year extension.
  • Travel expenses:
    • Provision for travel from the student’s home country to the ICGEB lab at the start of the fellowship.
    • Return travel provision upon completion of the fellowship.
  • Medical health insurance: Coverage for the duration of the fellowship.
  • University tuition fees: Covered for the entire PhD registration period.
  • Visa/permit costs: Application and renewal costs are reimbursed.
  • Support for participation in external meetings, courses, and events (generally provided by the Group Leader/PI).

✅ Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Nationality:
    • Must be nationals of Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, or Uganda.
    • Displaced researchers currently working in any of these countries are considered nationals.
  • Degree requirements:
    • For ICGEB Trieste: Hold a BSc (Honours) degree.
    • For ICGEB Cape Town and New Delhi: Hold an MSc degree.
  • English proficiency:
    • A good working knowledge of English supported by a proficiency certificate (TOEFL, Cambridge Certificate, or equivalent).
    • If English was the medium of instruction, an official certificate from the university is required.
  • Age limit: No age limit for applications.

📋 Application Process

Applicants will need to upload the following documents in PDF format:

  1. Full CV.
  2. Academic records:
    • Diploma certificates and transcripts with detailed information on all courses/examinations completed, credit value, and grades received.
    • Documents must bear official seals and signatures from the degree-granting university.
    • Submit original documents accompanied by an official English translation.
  3. Written Statement from the ICGEB Group Leader.
  4. Valid identification document: Passport or identity card (recommended passport validity: at least 12 months).
  5. English Certificate:
    • TOEFL, Cambridge, or similar proficiency certificate.
    • Not required if English was the medium of instruction (official university certificate required).
