The Harvard Global Health Institute Visiting Research Scholarship Program is designed to foster collaboration between Harvard faculty and international research collaborators. Applications must be submitted by a Harvard faculty member, who will act as the sponsor for the visiting scholar.

The program aims to deepen existing research relationships and provide financial support for the visiting scholar's time at Harvard.

βœ… Eligibility Criteria

For Sponsoring Harvard Faculty Collaborator:

  • Must be a Harvard faculty member at any school or affiliated hospital.
  • Should demonstrate significant engagement with the visiting scholar prior to the visit (this program focuses on deepening existing relationships, not creating new ones).
  • The primary Harvard department must agree to provide the necessary academic appointment (HUID) and sponsor a J-1 visa for the visiting scholar.
  • Must develop a work plan and meet regularly with the visiting scholar during their time on campus.
  • Should make a strong case that in-person collaboration would be beneficial.

For HGHI Visiting Research Scholar:

  • Must hold a doctoral degree in a relevant field (exceptional candidates with a master’s degree will be considered).
  • Should provide evidence of significant collaborative work with the sponsor (e.g., co-authored publications, co-developed curricula, or joint policy/service work).
  • Must be in good standing with their home institution.
  • Must have an active passport and the ability to obtain a J-1 visa for travel to the United States.
  • Must reside in the Boston, MA area during their time in residence.
  • Must satisfy visa requirements for English language proficiency.
