📝 About The Fellowship

The Global Africa Translation Fellowship is a non-residential program that allows recipients to undertake their work outside The Africa Institute, Global Studies University (Sharjah, UAE). The fellowship aims to make significant texts in African and African Diaspora studies accessible to a wider global readership.

  • Funding will range from $1,000 to $5,000, depending on the scope and quality of the proposed project.

✅ Eligibility Criteria

  • Open to applicants from across the Global South.
  • Eligible projects may include:
    • Retranslations of classic texts.
    • Previously untranslated works, including poetry, prose, or collections of critical theory.
  • Projects may be either works-in-progress or newly conceived works feasible for completion within the fellowship period.

📅 Application Date and Process

Required Documents

  1. Two-page CV/résumé including:
    • Institutional affiliation.
    • Educational qualifications (highest degree received).
    • Key publications or works produced.
  2. Two-page summary (single-spaced, font size 12) describing:
    • The translation to be undertaken during the fellowship period.
    • The significance of the work.
    • Justification for a re-translation, if applicable.
    • Proposed dates of completion (projects may be works-in-progress or new projects feasible within the grant timeframe).
  3. 4–5-page sample (double-spaced, font size 12) of the original text(s) alongside the translation.
  4. Explanation of copyright status:
    • If the work is not in the public domain, include:
      • A copy of the copyright notice from the original text.
      • A letter from the copyright holder confirming that English-language rights are available.
