🖼️ About Getty Scholars Program

The Getty Scholars Program fosters innovative research about art, conceived in the broadest terms, and its histories. It provides a platform for international scholars to forge collaborations across disciplines and professional practices while developing new audiences for their work. Scholars may be in residence at the Getty Center or Getty Villa.

For the 2026–2027 year, the program invites proposals for projects exploring provenance and adjacent research areas, including:

  • History of collecting
  • Study of the art market
  • Ownership of art objects across world regions and time periods

Scholars will have access to the Getty Research Institute’s vast collections and the remodeled Getty Provenance Index, enabling cutting-edge computational approaches to provenance studies.

🎁 Benefits of Getty Scholars Program

Scholar Grant recipients may be in residence for three to nine months and receive stipends as follows:

  • Three-month residency: September–December/January–March; $21,500 stipend
  • Six-month residency: September–March/January–June; $43,000 stipend
  • Nine-month residency: September–June; $65,000 stipend

Additional Benefits:

  • Workstation at the Getty Research Institute or Getty Villa
  • Research assistance
  • Travel stipend
  • Apartment in the Getty scholar housing complex
  • Healthcare option

Note: These terms apply as of July 2024 and are subject to future changes.

✅ Getty Scholars Program Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • PhD Requirement: Scholars should have received a PhD before September 1, 2022.
  • Applicants with commensurate professional experience in associated fields (without a PhD) will also be considered.
  • Scholars who received their doctoral degree after September 1, 2022 should apply for a Postdoctoral Fellowship.
  • Previous Getty Residential Grant recipients are eligible to reapply after a waiting period of 6 years.

📄 Application Date and Process

Project Proposal:

The proposal should not exceed 5 pages, typed and double-spaced, and must include:

  • Project description
  • How the project addresses the annual theme
  • Contribution to the applicant’s field of scholarship
  • Proposed plan for study and research
  • Benefits from Getty resources (if applicable)
  • For AAAHI Grants: How the project generates new knowledge in African American art history

Additional Documents:

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV): Record of all professional activities.
  • Optional Writing Sample: A single writing sample (max 20 double-spaced pages) may be submitted in support of the proposal.
