Program Overview

Recipients of the program will:

  • Spend three months in residence at the Getty Conservation Institute.
  • Pursue their projects free from work-related obligations.
  • Utilize research collections at the Getty Center and Getty Villa.
  • Participate in the intellectual life of Getty alongside other scholars, fellows, and interns.

✅ Eligibility Criteria

Applications are welcome from researchers and practitioners of all nationalities working in the fields of:

  • Conservation.
  • Historic preservation.
  • Heritage science.
  • Related fields.

Requirements:

  • At least seven years of professional experience.
  • Established record of publications and contributions to the field.
  • Individuals from underrepresented groups in cultural heritage conservation are encouraged to apply.

Restrictions:

  • Proposals for postdoctoral research or research contributing to a PhD or other academic degree will not be considered.
  • Recent PhDs in chemistry or material sciences should apply to the Postdoctoral Fellowship in Conservation Science.
  • Current Getty staff and their immediate family members are not eligible.
  • Previous recipients of the Conservation Guest Scholar Grant may reapply after a six-year waiting period.

📝 Application Process

How to Apply:

Applications must be submitted through the Getty Foundation Grant Portal.

  • Use Google Chrome, Firefox, or Safari for the best experience (Internet Explorer is not compatible).
  • Save your application form and return to it via the "Applications: In Progress" link to avoid creating multiple versions.

Project Proposal:

The proposal should not exceed five pages, typed and double-spaced. It must include the following sections:

  1. Project Description
  2. Methodology (specify components to be pursued at Getty).
  3. Expected Outcome
  4. Contribution to the Conservation Field
  5. Applicant's Qualifications
  6. Benefits from Getty Resources
