1. High Academic and Professional Merit

2. Strong Program Proposal

A successful proposal should:

  • Include an educational component of study and/or research

  • Present a clear and specific plan to achieve the proposed goals

3. Defined Potential Outcomes

  • Detail long-term linkages and collaborations at personal, academic, and professional levels

4. Ambassadorial Skills

Fulbrighters are expected to:

  • Promote mutual understanding between Australia and the U.S.
  • Share their knowledge upon return
  • Build ongoing partnerships and linkages

💰 Benefits of the Scholarship

  • Scholarship Value: $30,000 - $500,000 (depending on award category and program length)
  • Monthly Stipend: Based on the current approved MMR
  • Partial Tuition Allowance: Subject to funding availability
  • Round-trip Airfare: Economy class airfare (capped at AUD $4,000)
  • Settling-in Allowance
  • Health Benefits Plan: Limited Accident and Sickness Program for Exchanges (ASPE)
  • Orientation and Networking Opportunities
  • Support from the Commission: Before and during the program

✅ Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be Australian citizens
  • Not hold dual citizenship with the U.S.
  • Reside in Australia at the time of application (exceptions may apply)
  • Not have commenced the degree or project in the U.S.
  • Not have held a J1 or J2 visa in the 24 months before the program starts
  • Hold an undergraduate degree
  • For degree-seeking applicants: Acceptance to a U.S. institution is not required at the time of application
  • For visiting student researchers: Must have a letter of invitation from the proposed host institution

Additional Notes:

  • Applicants in their final year of study may apply for a postgraduate degree award but must complete their undergraduate degree before commencing the program.
  • Applicants who have secured a Rhodes, John Monash, or Ramsay scholarship are not eligible for a Fulbright Scholarship.
