📖 About the Program

The Fulbright Foreign Student Program is the largest Fulbright program in Africa, offering educational opportunities for up to two years of study toward a graduate degree at a U.S. university or participation in a non-degree research or professional program.

Applications are accepted from candidates in:

  • Public and private educational and cultural institutions
  • Independent research institutes
  • Professional institutions

🎁 Benefits

  • Funding Duration:

    • Maximum of two years for a master’s or doctoral program.
    • Students in programs shorter than two years will receive funding only for the designated period of degree completion as stipulated by the host institution.
    • Master’s applicants are given placement priority.
  • Ph.D. Candidates:

    • Those securing funding from outside sources will remain under Fulbright visa sponsorship.
    • Candidates unable to secure funding for additional years will return home without completing their degree.

✅ Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be citizens of Tanzania or permanent residents qualified to hold a valid Tanzanian passport.
  • Have a record of outstanding academic achievement and preparation in their chosen field of study.
  • Show high motivation and serious commitment to completing the program and returning home.
  • Possess at least the equivalent of four years of university study or a U.S. bachelor’s degree.
    • Candidates with three years of tertiary study must have the equivalent of 13 years of primary and secondary school and their undergraduate degree should qualify them for higher education in Tanzanian universities.
  • Demonstrate adequate background if pursuing a field different from their current field of study.
  • Submit evidence of endorsement from their employer and commit to returning to their academic institution, government, civil society, or private sector position in Tanzania upon completion of the program.
  • Have two years’ professional experience relevant to their prospective field of study.
  • Possess a sufficiently high level of English proficiency to complete a full-time graduate program in the United States.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with no extensive or recent U.S. experience.
  • Applicants must not have received more than one Fulbright Student grant (except Foreign Language Teaching Assistant alumni).
  • Employees of the State Department or other U.S. Government agencies are ineligible during their employment and for one year following termination of employment.
