Opportunity Overview

First launched in 2021, this fellowship celebrates the spirit of the FSG list and its commitment to invention, curiosity, and extending the limits of literature.

The fellowship offers $15,000 in funding, editorial guidance, and support from the FSG community. It aims to empower writers by providing mentorship, networking opportunities, and a deeper understanding of the publishing industry.

✅ Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Must not have published a book-length work in any genre, have a book under contract, or be negotiating a contract in the United States or abroad by the time the fellowship begins. Publishing short poetry chapbooks will not exclude eligibility.
  • Submit in only one category: fiction, nonfiction, or poetry.
  • Must be a U.S. Permanent Resident (green card holder) or U.S. Citizen.
  • No experience, degree credentials, or location requirements. The fellowship will take place remotely.
  • Writing must be for an adult audience in the English language.
  • Must be over 18 years of age.
  • Cannot be an employee or family member of an employee of FSG or any other Macmillan affiliate.
  • May not use generative AI or work from AI-generated text for their samples and statements.

📝 Application Process

Applicants must submit the following materials:

Writing Sample

  • Fiction/Nonfiction: Between 40–50 double-spaced pages.
  • Poetry: Between 8–12 pages.
  • Samples can include previously published work and do not need to be from a single section of the work.

Statement of Purpose

  • A statement of no more than 500 words.

Important Note: The applicant’s name and contact information must not appear anywhere on the writing sample or Statement of Purpose, including within the uploaded file name.
