Earth Shorts 2025 is seeking social media content creators and environmental journalists interested in learning more about biodiversity issues and incorporating journalism skills for a joint fellowship program.

📖 About the Fellowship

Following a successful pilot project in the Philippines, Earth Journalism Network (EJN) is expanding the Earth Shorts initiative across South and Southeast Asia. This program aims to strengthen the quality of actionable biodiversity information on social media platforms, produced by both journalists and content creators.

🎁 Benefits

Participants in the Earth Shorts 2025 Fellowship will receive:

  • US$2,000 for each of the 10 selected social media content creators and 10 journalists across South and Southeast Asia.
  • A three-day virtual training workshop on biodiversity and conservation issues.
  • Mentorship support to produce and disseminate at least five pieces of biodiversity-related video content on social media platforms.

✅ Eligibility Criteria

Social Media Content Creators

  • Must actively and frequently post short-form videos on platforms like TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, or X.
  • Content topics can include lifestyle, social issues, travel, science, economy, politics, and health.
  • Audience size should be between 20,000 and 200,000 followers.
  • Should not currently report for any media outlets (former journalists are eligible).
  • Prior content focused on biodiversity is not required, but an interest in linking your work to biodiversity issues is essential.

Journalists

  • Must actively and frequently report on biodiversity issues.
  • Can be on staff at a media outlet or freelance.
  • Should have an active presence on social media platforms, posting at least once a week and/or regularly creating video or text content about journalistic projects.
  • Prior experience as a content creator is not required, but an interest in increasing social media skills is essential.

General Requirements

  • Applications must be submitted in English.
  • Applicants must have a working understanding of English or access to a translator for communication with Internews staff.
  • Content can be produced in any language.

📝 Selection Criteria

For Content Creators

  • A consistent track record of producing short-form video content.
  • Audience size between 20,000 and 200,000 followers.

For Journalists

  • A consistent track record of covering biodiversity issues for media outlets.
  • An active social media presence, such as posting at least once a week and creating video or text content about journalistic projects.

General Judging Criteria

  • Relevance: Does the video idea meet the criteria and objectives of the call?
  • Angle: Does the content bring new insights or offer a fresh perspective on biodiversity issues?
  • Impact: Is the pitch compelling, likely to inform, engage, and urge action?
  • Innovative Storytelling: Creative video editing approaches, narrative styles, and/or data usage will be considered a plus.
  • Motivation: Demonstrated interest in producing impactful content on biodiversity and a clear plan to continue this work after the fellowship.
  • Availability: Fellows must commit to participating in pre- and post-workshop surveys, attending all training sessions, and producing at least five pieces of content by February 2026.
