📚 Areas of Study

In 2025, awards will be made only to those studying in the following areas:

  1. Justice: Includes Climate Justice, Law, Economics, and Politics
  2. Education: Policy and practice
  3. Humanities: Includes Literature, History, Anthropology, and the Arts

Important Notes

  • Interdisciplinary courses and doctoral studies may sometimes defy easy categorization. Applicants are urged to use their judgment in assessing whether to apply.
  • Applications that clearly do not fall within these areas (e.g., MBAs, medical sciences, sports sciences, and applied sciences) will not be considered.
  • In 2026, Climate Justice will be a priority. Climate Justice-related scholarship applications may be in a science or applied science field, provided they demonstrate relevance to Climate Justice matters.

đź’° Benefits of Canon Collins Trust Scholarships

  • Funding is provided for up to a maximum of two years for Masters and PhD students, with the ability to reapply for a third year. Continued funding depends on satisfactory progress and academic reports.
  • Scholarship value ranges from R20,000 to R100,000, depending on student circumstances.
  • Supports both full-time and part-time study, including distance learning.
  • Scholarship holders are expected to participate in an annual conference and smaller events throughout the year, contributing to the Canon Collins Trust network.

âś… Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be a national of, or have refugee status in, one of the following countries: Namibia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland, Zambia.
  • Be normally resident in one of the above countries.
  • Possess a good first degree (minimum second class, upper division or equivalent) or be about to graduate in the year of application.
  • Be studying or applying to study at a South African university.

Applicants must upload the following supporting documentation:

  • Copy of degree certificates, if available
  • Certified academic transcripts
  • CV
  • ID document (passport, birth certificate, driver’s license)
  • Two reference letters

  • Proof of refugee status, if applicable
  • Two recent payslips, if currently employed
  • PhD proposal (for PhD applicants)
  • Supporting statement from proposed supervisor (for PhD applicants)
  • Sample piece of writing (for Masters applicants)
