📝 About ANZSOG’s Resident and Visiting Academic Fellowships

ANZSOG has opened applications for the second round of its Academic Fellows Program, commencing in 2026. This program offers academics the opportunity to:

  • Contribute to ANZSOG’s work.
  • Deepen their research.
  • Strengthen engagement with practitioners and academic peers in the field of public governance.

Fellowship Streams

The program offers short-term fellowships in two streams:

  1. Resident Academic Fellows

    • Open to scholars from ANZSOG Partner Universities.
    • Duration: 4-6 months (between February and November 2026).
  2. Visiting Academic Fellows

    • Open to academics from other Australian and New Zealand universities, as well as international institutions.
    • Duration: 1-3 months (between February and November 2026).

The Fellowships aim to foster research engagement for impact, ensuring academic insights are relevant and timely for policy and practice. Fellows are expected to demonstrate how their activities will deliver impact for ANZSOG’s government members and contribute to building public governance that people trust.

The fellowship program supports transformative public governance and capability development in the following four Areas of Focus:

  1. Leadership, capability, and development
  2. First Nations & Māori perspectives and practice in public governance
  3. Policymaking, design, and impact
  4. Structures and operations of government

💰 Benefits of ANZSOG’s Fellowships

Resident Academic Fellows

  • Funding Amount: AUD $37,301 (plus contribution to domestic travel costs).
  • Financial support for a flexible academic residency of 4-6 months.
  • Funding can be used for teaching buyout or alternative agreed activities for research-only academics.

Visiting Academic Fellows

  • Access to desk and meeting rooms in ANZSOG’s Sydney or Melbourne locations.
  • Support for guest lectures, seminars, and workshops.
  • Travel and Accommodation Support:
    • Capped contribution to international airfares and local accommodation costs.
    • For 2026: ANZSOG will contribute up to AUD $8,000 for economy airfare and accommodation.

✅ Eligibility Criteria

Resident Academic Fellows

  • Must be Australian or New Zealand academics employed at an ANZSOG member university (minimum 50% FTE at fellowship commencement).
  • A completed PhD in a relevant field with at least 5 years post-PhD experience (career interruptions permitting).

Visiting Academic Fellows

  • Open to academics employed at any university worldwide.
  • Must hold a valid visa if not a resident of Australia or New Zealand.
  • A completed PhD in a relevant field with at least 5 years post-PhD experience (career interruptions permitting).

📅 Application Process

Applicants are required to submit the following documents:

  1. Proposed Program of Activity (maximum 1000 words).
  2. Statement of Intent:
    • What you hope to gain from the experience.
    • How it will contribute to ANZSOG.
    • How you would evaluate its impact (maximum 500 words).
  3. Short-form CV (maximum 3 pages).
  4. Letter of Support: A brief letter from your supervisor approving your leave of absence.

  • Combine all documents into a single PDF file.
  • Add your surname to the start of the filename.
  • Email the application to research@anzsog.edu.au by the deadline.
