📖 About Algorithmic Accountability Reporting Fellowship

The fellowship aims to address pressing topics such as the expansion of generative AI infrastructure, the influence of big tech executives in public administrations, and their impact on regulation. AlgorithmWatch invites journalists and researchers across Europe to join the new cohort to investigate automated injustice and the relationship between AI and power.

The fellowship will run from November 10, 2025 to May 10, 2026. During this period, fellows will receive financial support, mentoring sessions, and organizational resources. Fellows are expected to produce at least one journalistic story, audio or video feature, research report, or similar output by the end of the fellowship. AlgorithmWatch will also assist in the publication process.

🎁 Benefits of the Fellowship

  • Financial Support: Up to €7,400 gross per fellow. Joint proposals with research partners are allowed, and the funding will be divided equally among participants.
  • Publication Freedom: Fellows can choose the media outlet for publication or sell their stories. Alternatively, stories can be published on AlgorithmWatch's platforms. Outreach support is included.
  • Mentorship: Optional mentorship sessions with AlgorithmWatch team members and external researchers in the algorithmic accountability field.
  • Networking Opportunity: Fellows will be invited to an in-person gathering in Berlin at the start of the fellowship.

✅ Eligibility Criteria

General Requirements

  • Applicants must be 18 years or older.
  • Persons from minoritized or marginalized groups are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • No background in computer science is required, but familiarity with the algorithmic field and experience in writing and working with journalists is expected.

Specific Requirements

  • Residence: Applicants must reside in a European Union country, EFTA country (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland), a candidate country, or a former EU country.
  • Language Proficiency: Written English at a B2 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
  • Interest: A strong interest in AI accountability and automated decision-making.
  • Commitment: Ability to complete the research within the fellowship timeline and deliver at least one journalistic product (e.g., article, audio/video feature, report).
