π About Africville Heritage Trust Society Scholarship Program
The Africville Heritage Trust (AHT), in collaboration with Waterbury Newton Law Firm, has established a scholarship program to provide financial assistance to:
- Former residents and descendants of former Africville residents pursuing post-secondary education.
- Students who demonstrate efforts to further the purpose of the Society through community advocacy, research, publications, and training.
This scholarship is made possible through a $100,000 donation from Waterbury Newton Law Firm, which represents a portion of legal fees received in the settlement of an action against the former City of Halifax.

π Benefits of the Scholarship
- The scholarship fund will provide up to five (5) individual scholarships totaling $5,000 annually.
- Scholarships are available for students in any field of post-secondary study at an accredited Canadian post-secondary institution.
β Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for the scholarship, applicants must:
- Be a Canadian citizen.
- Be a former Africville resident or a descendant of a former Africville resident.
- Alternatively, applicants who do not meet this requirement may be considered if they have demonstrated efforts to further the purpose of the AHT (e.g., community advocacy, research, publications, or training).
- Be one of the following:
- A graduating high school student or mature student entering a Canadian accredited post-secondary institution.
- A student currently attending a Canadian accredited post-secondary institution, provided they are returning to school the following year.
- Not be:
- An employee of the AHT (unless the employee is a student completing a summer term, work term, internship, or similar position).
- A board member of the AHT.
- An immediate family member of a member of the Scholarship Committee.
π Evaluation Criteria
Applicants will also be evaluated based on the following:
- Participation in extra-curricular school and community activities.
- Honours or awards received or other community recognition.
- Work experience.
- Goals and aspirations.
- Academic achievement.
- Unique personal or family circumstances, such as financial need.
- References.
