📖 About the Fellowship

The Academy of International Affairs North Rhine-Westphalia (AIA NRW) offers fellowships for outstanding scholars and practitioners in Bonn, Germany, the German UN-City. Applicants can apply to one of the following two tracks:

  • Academic Track: For projects with an explicit academic focus, linking to ongoing or emerging academic debates, and contributing to a better understanding of international politics.
  • Practitioner's Track: For projects reflecting on international politics from the perspective of practical experience in a relevant professional field, with a clear objective of contributing to a better understanding of international politics.

✅ Eligibility Criteria

The fellowship is open to:

  • Scholars: Senior and younger scholars (post-doc level and upwards) from all academic disciplines.
  • Practitioners: Professionals from politics, diplomacy, media, business, and civil society.
  • Applications addressing the focus topic or other vital questions in the field of international politics are welcome.
  • Both individual and tandem projects can be considered.

📝 Application Process

Applicants must submit the following documents compiled into one PDF:

  1. General Requirements:

    • A letter of motivation.
    • A proposal of the envisaged academic project at AIA NRW (max. 5 pages), including:
      • Guiding research questions.
      • A brief summary of the state of research in the respective field.
      • A specific work plan/timetable and targeted outputs.
      • The expected added value of the stay in Bonn within the AIA NRW environment.
    • A short CV (max. 2 pages).
  2. Additional Requirements for the Academic Track:

    • A complete list of publications.
    • Electronic copies of 2-3 recent journal publications.

Submission Details

  • Applications must be sent to application@aia-nrw.org by June 29, 2025.
  • Decisions will be made by the Academic Board and communicated by early October 2025.
