The APNI Young African Phosphorus Fellowship aims to support full-time scientists working in African NARES institutions (National Agricultural Research and Extension System) or African universities. The fellowship encourages scientific programs focused on understanding and improving phosphorus (P) management in Africa’s field or tree crop agroecosystems.

✅ Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the fellowship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Employment:
- Be a full-time scientist working at an African NARES institution or university.
- Scientists in Post-Doctorate positions are also eligible.
- Only applicants who have completed their Ph.D. program will be considered.

Proposal Submission:
Submit a creative proposal addressing current knowledge gaps or synthesizing existing information to improve phosphorus (P) management. Proposals should align with at least one of APNI’s high-priority topics:- 4R Nutrient Stewardship: Matching crop growth dynamics with P applications based on adjustments in source, rate, time, or placement.
- Carbon Farming: Biomass turnover and P applications.
- Soil Health: Residue management, innovative P use, cropping system diversification, and P management in problem soils (e.g., high P-fixing soils).
- Precision Farming: Innovations addressing P variability at the field scale.

Collaboration:
Evidence of scientific partnerships and institutional collaboration will be reviewed favorably. -
Encouragement for Female Scientists:
Female scientists are especially encouraged to apply.
📝 Application Process
To complete the application process, applicants must submit the following documents in English or French:

Proposal Description:
A detailed explanation of how the fellowship will lead to improved understanding of P management in agricultural systems. This should include new research, data synthesis, or travel plans supported by the fellowship funds. The proposal must highlight originality, innovative approaches, and relevance. -
Letters of Support:
- Two signed letters of support, one of which must be from the applicant’s supervisor.
- Letters must be written on official letterhead and include the phone number and email address of the letter writer.

Include the applicant’s date of birth, academic degrees, and any relevant publications related to P behavior in soil, water, or plants. -
Final Report:
A short report will be required at the end of the award period, describing how the funds were used to support the proposal outcomes. -
