31ST THE SCIENCE OF CONSCIOUSNESS 2025
The Science of Consciousness (TSC) conference is the world's longest-running interdisciplinary gathering focused on the study of consciousness, the nature of existence, and our place in the universe.
Conference History
Since 1994, TSC has alternated yearly between Tucson, Arizona, USA, and various international locations, including:
- Italy
- Denmark
- Japan
- Sweden
- Czech Republic
- Hungary
- Hong Kong
- India
- California
- Switzerland
- Finland
In 2023, the conference took place in Taormina, on the island of Sicily. Looking ahead, TSC 2025 will be held in Barcelona, Spain, preceding and in conjunction with The Festival of Consciousness.
Current Focus
We are at a crossroads in the age-old study of consciousness. Over the past thirty years, approaches to understanding consciousness have diverged along two distinct paths:
- Neurocomputational Views: This perspective sees the brain as a complex computer composed of simple neurons, a view compatible with the idea of AI systems becoming conscious.
- Funda-Mental Views: This approach considers consciousness as intrinsic to the universe, connected to the brain through quantum biology.
TSC explores the funda-mental view, rigorously embracing neuroscience and biology beyond the scope of AI-compatible simple neurons. Ironically, conscious AI may be most likely to occur in biomimetic quantum computers.
