Abstract
This study investigates the wellbeing construct of rural South African women, analyzing textual data from focus group discussions to assess the appropriateness of unidimensional wellbeing measures. It finds that wellbeing encompasses relations with others, autonomy, and environmental mastery, and that participants have a relational view of themselves, differing from individuated or collectivist views. These findings have implications for policy implementation and evaluation, suggesting the need for multidimensional measures to accurately capture progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 3.
