Abstract
This study analyzes the impact of the water-energy nexus in a desalination-based water sector, using Israel as a case study. Desalination plants, being large energy consumers, participate in the Electricity Load Shedding Program (ELSP) during energy shortages. The study focuses on the interdependency between the water and energy sectors during an extreme heat wave, revealing that energy shedding compensation is significantly higher than the economic loss from reduced water production. This imbalance negatively impacts the water sector, potentially compromising service levels. The authors conclude that coordinated government policies are needed for efficient joint management strategies to avoid power and water shortages during extreme events.
