Abstract
This paper investigates the historical evolution of perceived trustworthiness in Western Europe from 1500 to 2000. Using machine learning to analyze facial cues in historical portraits from large online databases, the researchers developed an algorithm to estimate perceived trustworthiness from facial expressions. Results indicate a significant increase in perceived trustworthiness over time, potentially linked to rising living standards.
