Abstract
This research explores the impact of source text type on Chinese-English translation effort using translation entropy. An eye-tracking and key-logging experiment with 31 student translators translating legal, advertising, news, and poetic texts showed significant differences in effort across text types, measurable through subjective ratings, fixation, pause, translation time, and edits. Translation entropy, a measure of translation uncertainty, also differed significantly among text types, indicating that source text features affect translation uncertainty and, consequently, translation effort. The findings confirm the reliability of translation entropy as a predictor of translation effort.
