Surface stratification determines the interfacial water structure of simple electrolyte solutions
Y. Litman, K. Chiang, et al.
This groundbreaking study by Yair Litman, Kuo-Yang Chiang, Takakazu Seki, Yuki Nagata, and Mischa Bonn reveals that larger ions do not behave as surface-active elements in electrolyte solutions. Instead, they uncover a stratified interface where ions reside in a subsurface layer, altering water organization at the air/water boundary.
