Social-Media-Based Mental Health Interventions: Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials
Q. Zhang, Z. Huang, et al.
This preregistered meta-analysis, conducted by Qiyang Zhang, Zixuan Huang, Yuan Sui, Fu-Hung Lin, Hongjie Guan, Li Li, Ke Wang, and Amanda Neitzel, synthesized 17 rigorous RCTs (total n=5,624) and found social-media–based mental health interventions were effective overall (ES=0.32), reducing anxiety, depression, and stress. Effects were stronger for majority-female samples, human-guided and social-oriented programs, and usual-care controls, highlighting social media's potential in treating mental health symptoms.
