Therapy-resistant hypertension is a serious medical problem. This study established a new canine model of resistant hypertension by combining unilateral renal wrapping with contralateral renal artery occlusion. The effects of the soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC) stimulator BAY 41-2272 were investigated. Standard-of-care antihypertensives had only a slight effect on blood pressure, while BAY 41-2272 produced a dose-dependent reduction, both as a standalone therapy and in combination with standard treatments. The results suggest sGC stimulators may be an effective treatment option for resistant hypertension.
