This study simulates the rapid substitution of fossil gas in Germany using renewable electricity and heat pumps. The bottom-up modelling shows that heat pump installation is a fast method to reduce gas consumption and gas-fired power plant load hours. With targeted efforts, 60% of Russian gas imports could be replaced by 2025, allowing for parallel coal phase-out and e-mobility expansion.
