This research explored the effects of the legal system on SMEs operations in the Nigerian economy. The study aimed to address the gap in literature discussing the legal system and SMEs’ operations in Nigeria, focusing on the current level of support and suggesting approaches to enhance effective SMEs’ operations. A conceptual review of extant literature revealed the importance of the legal system's function to SMEs but also highlighted its weaknesses in providing necessary support. A model was proposed for restructuring the legal system and improving support from government and stakeholders to facilitate SME operations and enhance their contributions to the Nigerian economy. Further research was suggested to consider alternative methodological approaches, alternative dispute resolution, and comparative studies.
