Abstract
Chinese exhibits notable resistance to lexical borrowing, a phenomenon attributed to its ideographic writing system. The stable graphic-meaning correspondence in Chinese characters makes novel uses inconsistent with established usage, while the loose graphic-phonetic association renders phonetic transcriptions ineffective. This paper investigates the reasons behind this resistance, revealing the significant impact of writing on language ideology and challenging the traditional view of writing as a mere derivative of speech.
